Hong Kong-Mainland Creative Learning Cultural Exchange

The Hong Kong-Mainland Creative Learning Cultural Exchange, launched as a pilot programme in 2024, promotes collaboration and knowledge-sharing in creative teaching and learning among education professionals from Hong Kong and Mainland China. A total of 32 educators participated, representing cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Shandong, and Zhejiang.

Over five days, participants engaged in a variety of activities, including classroom observations, knowledge-sharing sessions, museum visits, and participation in the Knowledge Exchange forum. The forum featured keynote presentations, panel discussions, and live creative classroom experiences. On the final day, a dynamic, interactive dialogue between educators from Hong Kong and Mainland China provided an opportunity to consolidate insights and reflect on key learnings.

My learning experience in Hong Kong over the past few days has profoundly moved me! The education system here strongly emphasises nurturing students’ individuality, particularly in creative classrooms. Through engaging and enjoyable games, students learn in a relaxed and fun environment. I am utterly captivated by this approach! In such an environment, students become more confident, imaginative, and capable of thinking independently! I would like to incorporate this educational philosophy into my own teaching in the future.

This was a rare opportunity for cultural exchange with mainland teachers, allowing us to gain insights into each other’s curricula, teaching practices, and assessment methods. While I have previously observed lessons in mainland, I hadn’t had the chance to engage in dialogue with the teachers. Today’s exchange allowed me to learn more about the similarities and differences between Hong Kong and mainland schools, fostering mutual learning and brainstorming. It was very meaningful.

Thank you to AFTEC for inviting me to participate in this exchange programme. The rich array of activities over the past few days has left a deep impression, particularly the freedom and engagement of teachers and students in Hong Kong. In Shanghai, we have been exploring interdisciplinary creative design, as well as immediate feedback in classrooms and post-lesson practical tasks. Upon returning to Shanghai, I will apply the insights gained here to my teaching and come up with more creative activities to enrich our school’s arts curriculum.

This cultural exchange allowed me to experience diverse teaching approaches, where creative pedagogy enables students to develop their abilities holistically and ignite their intrinsic motivation. It also prompted me to reflect on the relationship between process and outcome. Moving forward, I would like to explore how to strike a balance between foundational and creative education, leveraging the strengths of various teaching methods. The focus should be student-centred, ensuring that every student discovers and unleashes their true potential.
