Creating Change

Jockey Club Arts-based Cross Curriculum Creative Learning Project

Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the 3-year Project is designed to complement the Hong Kong school curriculum to foster whole-person development and life-wide learning in students from Key Stage 2 (Primary 4 – 6). The project aims to nurture in students a self-directed learning approach to enhance critical thinking skills and creativity via experiential learning through the arts.

Beginning with Building the foundation (2021 – 22) required for the establishment of creative classrooms, we progressed to Connecting education and arts (2022 – 23) by fostering a trusting and collaborative environment. And now, Re-imagining the future (2023 – 24). We applaud the participants’ combined efforts to create transformative educational change through arts-based cross curriculum creative learning. Collaboration between educators and Creative Practitioners has the potential to transform learning and lay the framework for future innovative educational approaches.

I used to be afraid to speak my mind because I worried that if others had a different opinion, they might not want to be friends with me anymore. But now I feel that expressing myself helps others understand me better. Even if I make a mistake, the teachers always accept it and help us by encouraging us not to give up and guiding us forward.

Creative learning is easier than I initially thought. You do not need a lot of tools, resources, or special knowledge. The main thing is for parents to commit and realise that we need to accept children as they are and encourage their creativity.

Although integrating creative teaching and learning into school curriculum might be challenging, it has a significant impact on students. I believe that school and family are the most powerful influences on a student’s personal growth. If you want to make a lasting and profound impact on them, you would naturally focus on these two areas, which is what makes this programme special.

I used to try to lead students to give the answers I wanted. Now, I interact with students based on their answers and views. By providing more creative freedom to students, creative lessons become more inclusive, and we focus less on whether the answers are right or wrong, as in conventional lessons. Students derive a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment despite the difficulties, which helps them feel more at ease in their learning.
