About us

About us

Creativity allows us to recognise potential within ourselves and the world around us. It promotes problem-solving, nurtures relationships, cultivates resilience, and can transform lives in countless ways. At AFTEC, we work with students, educators, and creative practitioners to plant the seeds of creativity in our community—seeds we have seen yield season after season.

As a proudly homegrown Hong Kong organisation, we nurture the city’s greatest natural resource—its people. Through co-designed, collaborative, and inclusive bilingual educational programmes, we create supportive environments where young minds are free to explore, express, and flourish. We spark imagination, build confidence, and foster a sense of growth and belonging together.

Who we are

Dr Vicki Ooi
Artistic Director | Educator | Arts Visionary

Dr Vicki Ooi
Artistic Director | Educator | Arts Visionary

Dr Vicki Ooi’s journey in the arts began with the literal tearing down of walls—to create Hong Kong’s first double-height black box theatre at The University of Hong Kong. It was a fitting start for a visionary who has spent over six decades breaking boundaries in theatre, education, and cultural policy.

A theatre director, educator, and policy pioneer, Vicki began teaching Drama and Literature at The University of Hong Kong in 1971, where she co-founded The Drama Lab. Her passion for expanding artistic horizons led to the founding of the Seals Players Foundation in 1978, through which she directed over 30 productions and introduced Western plays in translation to local audiences.

In 1992, Vicki founded the Hong Kong chapter of the International Association of Theatre Critics. As a founding member of both this organisation and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, she has been a passionate advocate for the arts, driving efforts to enhance support and build stronger infrastructure for the creative community in the city. Her belief in the power of creativity to enrich language learning and build confidence led to collaborations with the HKSAR Education Bureau and the British Council, as well as the initiation of innovative drama-in-education programmes. In 2003, she founded Shakespeare4All, and in 2008, she launched The Absolutely Fabulous Theatre Connection—now known simply as AFTEC.

In 2023, Vicki received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies, a testament to her remarkable career spanning over 100 productions. Guided by her enduring belief in the transformative power of theatre to educate, empower, and inspire, Vicki continues to explore new creative ground.

Lynn Yau
Chief Executive Officer | Arts Educator | Researcher

For over two decades, Lynn Yau has championed the powerful intersection of the arts and education, driven by a belief that creativity fuels not only learning but also well-being and social connection. As the Chief Executive Officer of AFTEC, she has led the development of a dynamic arts-in-education platform grounded in research, empathy, and innovation.

As an advocate for “action research,” Lynn has built a portfolio that tests and applies arts-based strategies in classrooms, universities, and professional training environments. From language learning to social work and medical humanities, she has helped educators and learners tap into the transformative potential of the arts.

Under her leadership, AFTEC has earned multiple Arts Education Awards from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and received international recognition for its inclusive and impact-driven work.

Lynn is a Clore Fellow (United Kingdom, 2010 – 11) and was commended by the Chief Executive of Hong Kong for her outstanding contributions to arts education. Her research has been presented at international conferences in Hong Kong, Penang, Brisbane, and London.

She was commissioned to write a chapter in Creativity Money Love: Learning for the 21st Century (2011) and co-authored a chapter in The Palgrave Handbook of Global Arts Education (2017). In September 2025, the following has been published: Evolving Creative Mindsets: Thinking Through the Arts (book by the Hong Kong University Press);  Slow is More, an essay commissioned for the 10-Year Anniversary Edition of The Slow Professor (University of Toronto Press); and Five Professional Development Programs, an interview with Ellen Winner in Project Zero and Its Impact (Harvard Project Zero).

Lynn continues to inspire new thinking in creative learning while supporting and championing the next generation of creative educators, practitioners, and cultural leaders.
